Project Overview

Wichita Home Works completed this Stoney Point basement finish in Wichita, Kansas for homeowners who wanted to turn an unfinished lower level into a more comfortable and usable extension of the home.

The project focused on finishing the basement family room, fireplace area, circulation spaces, and related lower-level rooms. The basement layout included a large living area, an exercise room, bathroom area, closet, utility room, fireplace wall, desk area, and planned feature wall details. The design drawings show the finished living area at approximately 633 square feet, with an exercise room of approximately 171 square feet and a utility area that remained separate from the finished living spaces.

The finished basement gained drywall, ceiling texture, insulation, carpet, interior doors, a gas fireplace, stacked stone, tile hearth, and a more polished layout. The result is a lower level that feels much more intentional, with comfortable living space, a fireplace focal point, and flexible zones for exercise, storage, work, and entertainment.

The overall style is transitional basement living with warm modern and rustic details. The stacked stone fireplace, patterned carpet, soft wall colors, white trim, shiplap-style feature wall, and built-in concept areas create a clean but comfortable lower-level environment.

The Homeowner’s Vision

The goal was to finish the basement in a way that made the lower level more comfortable and more usable without overcomplicating the layout.

The homeowners wanted a finished family room, a fireplace feature, improved walls and ceilings, carpet, interior doors, and a basement layout that could support multiple uses. The plan included an exercise room, living area, desk zone, bathroom area, utility separation, and feature wall concepts for cabinetry and shelving.

Wichita Home Works’ in-house design team helped plan the basement finish layout, fireplace location, stacked stone surround, hearth tile, insulation, drywall, ceiling texture, carpet, doors, fireplace mantel detail, and the overall lower-level finish direction.

The final design created a basement that feels more complete, more inviting, and better suited for everyday use.

Scope of Work

Wichita Home Works coordinated the project from design and permitting through demolition, mechanical connections, insulation, drywall, ceiling texture, fireplace installation, flooring, doors, finish work, inspection coordination, and final closeout.

The project included:

Basement Layout and Planning

The basement layout was organized around a large family room, exercise room, bathroom, closet, utility area, fireplace wall, and desk area.

The design drawings show the family room occupying the largest finished zone, with the fireplace centered along the upper wall area and the stairway connecting into the living space. The exercise room was positioned on the opposite side of the basement, near the bathroom and closet area. The utility room remained a separate no-work area, helping preserve mechanical access while the finished spaces became more comfortable.

This planning helped the basement function as more than one open room. It created separate areas for relaxing, exercising, working, storage, and circulation.

Fireplace Removal and New Gas Fireplace

The existing fireplace was removed and replaced with a new high-efficiency gas fireplace.

The new fireplace was a Heat N Glo DV3732 gas fireplace with 19,000 BTUs, five ceramic logs, full firescreen, battery backup, glowing embers, fan kit, remote control, and final homeowner setup.

The fireplace gave the finished family room a clear focal point. It also made the basement feel warmer, more finished, and more like a true living area instead of a basic lower-level space.

Fireplace Stone and Hearth

The fireplace surround was finished with Rockmount Stacked Stone in Silver Canyon, installed from floor to ceiling on the front face.

A Chiado II Matte Atola 12×24 tile hearth was installed with Warm Grey grout. A maple wood fireplace trim detail was also included, sized at approximately 4 feet 10 inches wide by 4 inches high by 8 inches deep to fit the recessed wall condition.

The stacked stone gives the fireplace texture and depth, while the tile hearth creates a clean and durable base. Together, these details make the fireplace wall one of the strongest design features in the finished basement.

Gas Line and Electrical Support

The fireplace required mechanical coordination behind the finished wall.

Wichita Home Works connected a new gas line to the fireplace and installed electrical support for the fireplace hookup.

The final fireplace setup was completed with the fan installation and confirmation that the fireplace was operational, helping close out the project with the fireplace ready for use.

Insulation and Drywall

The basement exterior walls were insulated with R-11 unfaced batts, excluding the utility room.

Gaps were filled as needed, including around plumbing and electrical penetrations. The walls and ceilings received 1/2-inch ultralight drywall according to the design, with drywall window returns installed except at the bottom window sill areas. The drywall was taped, mudded, and smooth finished for paint or texture.

This work helped transform the basement from an unfinished lower level into a more comfortable finished space.

Ceiling Texture and Ceiling Paint

The basement hallway, bathroom, bedroom, and family room ceilings received knockdown texture.

The newly textured ceiling areas were painted with one coat of flat white ceiling paint.

The ceiling finish helped the basement feel cleaner and more complete while maintaining a practical lower-level finish.

Family Room Carpet

The family room received carpet over concrete.

The flooring scope included floor preparation, tack strip installation, NAPA pad, and Dwellings Step By Step Beach House 12×12 patterned carpet in the family room.

The carpet softened the main living area and made the basement feel more comfortable for relaxing, watching TV, gathering, and everyday use.

Interior Doors

Four Lincoln Park flat smooth one-panel interior doors were installed.

These doors helped define the finished basement rooms and utility access points while giving the lower level a cleaner finished look.

The simple one-panel style works well with a transitional basement design and keeps the finished rooms feeling clean and updated.

Entertainment Wall and Desk Area

The basement layout included planned feature areas for an entertainment wall and desk zone.

The design drawings show a long entertainment wall concept with site-built furniture base planning, bookcase-style shelving, crown material, a shiplap wall behind the bookcases running the length of the entertainment center, and a TV outlet location. The desk elevation shows base cabinets, file cabinet planning, wall cabinets, floating shelves, a site-built maple top, two-step crown, and a shiplap wall detail.

These planned features helped the basement support both entertainment and work-from-home use. They also gave the lower level a more custom look instead of leaving the finished room as a plain open space.

Exercise Room

The basement design included a dedicated exercise room.

The layout identifies an exercise room of approximately 13 feet 1 inch by 13 feet 1 inch, or about 171 square feet. Rolled rubber flooring was shown for this area in the design plan.

This room gives the basement a clear fitness or hobby zone separated from the main living area.

Bathroom and Utility Area

The basement layout included an existing bathroom area and utility zone.

The plan shows a compact bathroom near the exercise room and a larger utility room labeled as no-work area. Keeping the utility room separate allowed the finished basement to gain livable space while preserving mechanical access.

The final photos and project notes show the bathroom area tied into the finished lower-level environment, with finish-stage coordination completed around the surrounding basement work.

Inspection and Closeout

The project moved through final inspection and closeout with careful follow-through.

The basement received added under-stair drywall as part of inspection completion, and the final inspection passed in October 2022. Fireplace fan completion and operational confirmation followed as the final fireplace-related closeout item.

These final steps helped make sure the finished basement was ready for the homeowners to use with confidence.

Design and Finish Details

This project has a transitional basement style with warm modern and rustic details.

The stacked stone fireplace gives the family room texture and visual weight. The tile hearth creates a clean base at the fireplace. The patterned carpet softens the living area and helps the room feel more comfortable.

The shiplap-style feature wall concepts, white shelving, cabinet layouts, and maple top planning add a custom built-in feel to the entertainment and desk areas. The finished look is clean and comfortable without feeling overly formal.

The basement works well because it supports several different uses. It can serve as a family room, media room, workout area, office zone, guest overflow area, or everyday lower-level retreat.

Construction Story

This project began with a basement that had good potential but needed the right finish plan to become part of the home’s daily living space.

The first step was organizing the lower level into useful zones. The large family room became the main gathering area, the exercise room created a separate activity space, and the fireplace wall became the visual anchor for the basement.

The fireplace replacement added both function and style. Once the gas and electrical support were coordinated, the new fireplace, stacked stone surround, tile hearth, and maple trim helped the family room feel much more finished.

The walls and ceilings were then completed with insulation, drywall, smooth finishing, knockdown ceiling texture, and ceiling paint. Carpet brought warmth and comfort to the family room, while the new interior doors gave the lower level a cleaner finished structure.

As the project moved toward closeout, Wichita Home Works focused on final readiness, including fireplace fan coordination, under-stair drywall completion, carpet adjustment, final inspection, and operational confirmation.

The finished Stoney Point basement shows how a lower level can become a comfortable extension of the home with the right combination of layout planning, fireplace design, drywall, flooring, and finish details.
