Wichita Home Works completed this kitchen remodel in Wichita, Kansas for homeowners who wanted to update a warm, traditional kitchen with better finishes, improved function, and a cleaner overall layout.

The original kitchen had older wood cabinetry, soffits, dated flooring, paneling, chair rail, backsplash tile, and a compact layout that needed a more refined cabinet and finish plan. The remodel replaced the older kitchen components with new Rustic Birch Russet cabinets, quartz countertops, new backsplash tile, updated lighting, improved electrical, updated plumbing, and new LVP flooring through the kitchen, dining room, and laundry/bath area.

The finished kitchen keeps the warmth of stained wood while giving the home a fresher, more polished look. The new cabinetry adds storage and consistency, the quartz countertops brighten the work surfaces, and the ivory backsplash tile adds a classic backdrop that works well with the home’s traditional character.

The Homeowner’s Vision

The goal was to modernize the kitchen without losing the warmth and familiarity of the home. The homeowners wanted updated cabinets, new countertops, improved lighting, better electrical function, new flooring, and a kitchen that felt more finished while still fitting the character of the surrounding rooms.

The design kept several practical elements in place, including the appliances, faucet, and general kitchen footprint, while improving the surfaces, storage, electrical layout, and finish quality around them.

Wichita Home Works’ in-house design team helped plan the cabinet layout, countertop selection, backsplash layout, flooring direction, lighting updates, outlet locations, trim details, stain matching, and final finish coordination.

Scope of Work

Wichita Home Works coordinated the project from design and demolition through drywall, mechanical updates, cabinetry, countertops, backsplash tile, flooring, trim, painting, staining, final details, cleaning, and closeout.

The project included:

Kitchen and Dining Room Preparation

The remodel began by removing the existing kitchen lights, switches, outlets, cover plates, sink, countertops, upper cabinets, soffit above the upper cabinets, lower cabinets, flooring, paneling, chair rail, baseboards, casing, backsplash tile, and drywall where needed for the new installation.

The refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, stove, faucet, and soap dispenser were preserved for reuse or reinstallation where planned. This allowed the remodel to focus investment on the cabinetry, surfaces, flooring, lighting, and finish improvements that would have the biggest impact.

The kitchen was opened up for new drywall, updated electrical, new cabinet installation, and a more cohesive finish package.

Electrical and Lighting Updates

The kitchen and dining room received important electrical updates to support the new layout and bring the space up to modern daily-use needs.

The kitchen received five 4-inch LED ceiling puck lights controlled by two three-way switches, one 6-inch LED puck light above the sink, five backsplash outlets, a refrigerator outlet, stove electrical, dishwasher electrical, garbage disposal wiring, and a dedicated microwave circuit.

In the dining room, switches and outlets were replaced, and a customer-provided light fixture was installed.

These updates improved both function and comfort, giving the kitchen better task lighting, better outlet placement, and stronger support for everyday appliance use.

Plumbing Updates

The plumbing scope focused on improving the sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, and laundry/bath connections.

The refrigerator water line was cleaned up by removing the older saddle valve and repairing the basement ceiling water line where needed. New P-traps and shutoff valves were installed for the sink, and the existing faucet was reinstalled.

The dishwasher was reinstalled, and a customer-provided garbage disposal was installed. In the bathroom/laundry area, a customer-provided toilet was installed with new shutoff valves.

These plumbing updates helped the remodeled spaces function more reliably while preserving selected fixtures the homeowners wanted to keep.

Drywall and Ceiling Work

After demolition, Wichita Home Works prepared the kitchen and dining room walls and ceiling for a clean new finish.

The walls and ceiling were shimmed where needed, new drywall was installed in the areas affected by demolition, and the newly installed drywall was primed. The ceiling was skim coated and finished with knockdown texture, while the walls were smooth finished for paint and tile.

This phase helped create the clean backdrop needed for the new cabinetry, backsplash, trim, and paint.

Cabinetry and Storage

The kitchen received Koch Express Rustic Birch Russet cabinets with Hartford-style doors. The stained birch cabinetry gives the remodel a warm, classic look that fits the home’s traditional character.

The cabinet package included new lower cabinets, upper cabinets, an upper cabinet above the stove, upper cabinets above the refrigerator, west wall cabinets, sink base cabinet, peninsula cabinet planning, fillers, adjustable shelves, toe kick, matching base shoe, and crown molding to the ceiling.

The new cabinet layout improved storage while giving the kitchen a more consistent, finished appearance from wall to wall.

Countertops and Sink

The new countertops are Mikado Tranquility Gold quartz with a half-bullnose edge profile. The quartz adds a lighter, more refined surface while still coordinating with the warmth of the stained cabinetry.

The kitchen received a stainless steel 50/50 undermount sink. The existing faucet was reused, keeping a familiar fixture in the new design while pairing it with updated countertops, sink, and plumbing connections.

Tile Backsplash

The backsplash was finished with Soul 3×12 Ivory tile in a horizontal half-offset pattern.

On the main kitchen walls, the tile runs from the countertops to the bottom of the upper cabinets. Above the sink, the tile continues to the ceiling, creating a taller focal area and giving the sink wall a more custom look.

Ivory edge trim, Pale Umber grout, and coordinated silicone completed the backsplash installation. The finished tile adds texture and brightness while staying consistent with the warm, traditional feel of the remodel.

Flooring and Transitions

The kitchen, dining room, and laundry/bath area received Paramount Rigid Core Keystone Vintage 7×48 LVP flooring, installed north to south.

The flooring update helped connect the remodeled kitchen to the adjacent dining and laundry/bath spaces. A flush stairnose transition was installed at the top step leading to the basement, and transitions were added between the dining room and living room/entryway doorways.

The Keystone Vintage flooring brings a warm wood-look surface that fits naturally with the stained cabinetry and existing trim character.

Trim, Paint and Staining

New S107 mahogany baseboards were installed around the kitchen and dining room where trim had been removed. New S109 mahogany casing was installed at the kitchen and dining room doorways where needed.

The new trim was stain matched to the existing woodwork as closely as possible, then finished with sealer to help it blend into the home’s existing character.

The kitchen and dining room walls were painted to match the existing wall color, and the ceiling received flat white ceiling paint. Paint and stain touch-ups were completed in the areas affected by construction.

Finish Details

Final finish work included installing customer-provided cabinet pulls, resetting appliances, completing plumbing and electrical finishes, adjusting cabinet hardware, refining trim, completing touch-ups, replacing selected finish components, cleaning, and preparing the kitchen for final walkthrough.

These closeout details helped the remodel feel complete and ready for daily use.

Design and Finish Details

This project has a traditional style with warm transitional updates.

The Rustic Birch Russet cabinetry gives the kitchen a rich wood tone and a classic foundation. The Mikado Tranquility Gold quartz countertops brighten the room while adding a more elevated surface. The Soul Ivory backsplash tile keeps the design clean and timeless.
