Wichita Home Works completed this guest bedroom and bathroom remodel near Valley Center, Kansas for homeowners who wanted to create a more memorable and comfortable guest suite.

The project transformed a second-floor bedroom and bathroom into a coordinated retreat with a custom tiled shower, new vanity, decorative tile wall, upgraded lighting, custom barn doors, floating shelves, new flooring, wallpaper, and carefully selected warm finishes.

The bathroom became the most detailed part of the remodel. It includes a ceiling-height tile shower, corner bench, niche with quartz shelves, frameless sliding shower glass, rustic hickory vanity, Cambria Inverness Gold countertop, oil-rubbed bronze shower fixtures, brass accessories, and a textured aqua picket tile vanity wall.

The finished suite has a Mediterranean-inspired style with rustic, artisan, and old-world details. The antique-style barn doors, warm wood tones, bronze and brass finishes, handmade-looking tile, patterned floor, and soft wall treatments create a space that feels layered, personal, and very different from a standard guest bath update.

The Homeowner’s Vision

The goal was to make the guest bedroom and bathroom feel special, welcoming, and highly designed. The homeowners wanted the remodel to feel warm and custom, with more personality than a simple neutral bathroom update.

Wichita Home Works’ in-house design team helped plan the bathroom layout, custom shower, shower tile, niche, bench, vanity wall tile, flooring, vanity, countertop, floating shelves, wall sconces, barn door opening, bedroom lighting, wallpaper accent wall, finish metals, and the overall style direction.

The final design created a guest suite with a boutique feel: part bedroom refresh, part custom bathroom remodel, and part statement design project.

Scope of Work

Wichita Home Works coordinated the project from design and demolition through framing, mechanical updates, tile, cabinetry, glass, doors, lighting, finish carpentry, cleaning, and final closeout.

Bedroom and Bathroom Preparation

The remodel began by removing the existing bathroom vanity, vanity mirror, vanity light, faucet, vanity top, toilet, tile backsplash, shower door, shower faucet, shower tile, shower backing, bathroom tile floor, bathroom door, bathroom casing, and existing bedroom wood flooring.

The existing baseboard in the bathroom was preserved where possible for reuse. This helped maintain some continuity with the existing home while allowing the bathroom and bedroom to receive a much more dramatic finish update.

The bathroom and bedroom were then prepared for framing changes, drywall work, tile installation, new lighting, new flooring, and the custom barn door opening.

Framing and Door Opening

One of the defining layout changes was the new opening between the bedroom and bathroom.

Wichita Home Works reframed the bathroom entry for a 36-inch by 96-inch double barn door opening with rounded drywall corners. Backing was added to support the barn door hardware and shower glass installation.

The new bi-parting barn doors became an important design feature. They add visual impact from the bedroom side while creating a more dramatic entrance into the bathroom.

Electrical, Lighting and Bath Fan

The bedroom and bathroom lighting were updated to support both function and atmosphere.

In the bedroom, the existing light over the window was changed to an LED puck light, four new ceiling puck lights were added, and the existing center ceiling fan box was changed to an LED puck light. Two customer-provided wall sconces were installed on the wallpaper accent wall with independent switching.

In the bathroom, Wichita Home Works installed a new aged brass three-light vanity fixture, a GFCI outlet at the vanity, an outlet inside the new vanity, and an LED puck light above the shower.

A new Delta Breez 80 CFM bath fan with LED light was also installed to improve ventilation and comfort in the bathroom.

Plumbing and Bathroom Fixtures

The plumbing scope included a new shower valve, shower drain rough-in, finish shower trim, vanity faucet, toilet installation, and final fixture setup.

The shower was finished with Kohler oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, including a Rite-Temp shower valve trim, MasterShower hose, Awaken slide bar, hand shower, right-angle shower arm, and large round rain showerhead.

The bathroom also received an American Standard Champion 4 white elongated chair-height toilet and a Kohler Bellera vanity faucet in oil-rubbed bronze.

These finish selections helped support the old-world, Mediterranean-inspired feel of the bathroom.

Drywall, Paint, Wallpaper and Stain

The new bathroom door opening was drywalled and finished with rounded corners to create a softer transition between the bedroom and bathroom.

The bathroom and bedroom walls were patched and prepared for final finishes. The ceilings were painted in flat white, and the customer-provided wallpaper was installed on the bedroom accent wall.

Staining was an important part of the finish package. The custom vanity, floating shelves, casing, and baseboard were prepared and stained to create a warm, coordinated wood tone that worked with the tile, barn doors, and existing home details.

Custom Tile Shower

The custom shower became one of the standout features of the remodel.

Wichita Home Works rebuilt the shower with GoBoard backer board, a Schluter shower pan, Kerdi curb, and a 15-inch by 36-inch niche with two quartz shelves.

The shower walls were finished with Porto II Matte 12×24 Ivory tile installed to the ceiling in a 1/3 offset pattern. The shower pan was finished with coordinating Porto II Matte 2×2 mosaic tile.

The niche was finished with bronze round mosaic tile and Cambria Inverness Gold quartz shelves. The shower also includes a 16-inch by 16-inch by 24-inch corner bench with a Cambria Inverness Gold top, plus a matching Cambria Inverness Gold curb top.

The combination of ivory wall tile, bronze mosaic, quartz ledges, oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, and the shower bench gives the bathroom a warm and refined custom feel.

Vanity Wall Tile and Bathroom Flooring

The vanity wall was treated as a major design feature rather than a simple painted wall.

Wichita Home Works installed Ironworks Aqua 2×10 picket tile in a vertical pattern from the vanity wall to the ceiling. This tile adds color, texture, and artisan character behind the vanity, mirror, light fixture, and floating shelves.

The bathroom and bedroom flooring were finished with Urban District Downtown 2×8 tile in a half-offset pattern. This floor tile adds movement and warmth while connecting the bedroom and bathroom visually.

The tile selections helped give the project its Mediterranean-inspired personality, with a mix of aged color, warm neutrals, textured surfaces, and patterned installation.

Custom Vanity, Countertop and Shelving

The bathroom received a custom furniture-style vanity built from rustic hickory. The vanity includes a distressed character finish, four legs, added drawers, tied drawer fronts, a hair dryer organizer, and docking drawer storage.

The vanity was topped with Cambria Inverness Gold quartz with an eased edge and a white oval undermount sink.

Two floating shelves were installed above the toilet, built from material selected to coordinate with the vanity. These shelves add warmth, storage, and styling space while helping the toilet wall feel intentional and finished.

Shower Glass, Barn Doors and Accessories

The shower was completed with a Quatro frameless heavy-glass sliding system, clear tempered glass, satin brass hardware, a puck pull, and a towel bar on the panel.

The bedroom-to-bathroom opening received Rustica bi-parting barn door track hardware in a Mountain Gold finish with black barn door wheels. The customer-provided antique solid doors were trimmed for height and installed as a statement feature between the spaces.

Finish details included a customer-provided mirror, Kohler modern brass toilet paper holder, brass robe hooks, cabinet hardware, vanity hardware coordination, and final accessory installation.

Design and Finish Details

This project has a Mediterranean-inspired style with rustic and artisan details.

The design uses warm wood, aged metal finishes, patterned tile, vertical picket tile, bronze mosaics, soft ivory shower tile, quartz with warm veining, antique-style barn doors, and a layered bedroom accent wall.

The bathroom feels intentionally textured. The Ironworks Aqua picket tile adds a weathered blue-green tone, the bronze niche mosaic adds warmth, the rustic hickory vanity adds natural character, and the oil-rubbed bronze shower fixtures create an old-world feel.

The bedroom continues the mood with wallpaper, sconces, warm doors, tile flooring, and the bi-parting barn door entry into the bathroom.

Construction Story

This project began with the goal of creating a guest suite that felt memorable from the moment someone walked into the room.
