Project Overview
Wichita Home Works completed this combined deck and poolside pavilion remodel in Wichita, Kansas for homeowners who wanted to turn their backyard into a more comfortable, durable, and complete outdoor living space.
This project was completed in two connected phases. The first phase focused on the poolside pavilion and outdoor kitchen area. The second phase focused on rebuilding the elevated deck and stairs that overlook the backyard and pool. Together, the two scopes created a more polished, functional, and inviting outdoor environment.
The finished backyard now includes a covered pavilion over the outdoor kitchen, a cedar ceiling, stained cedar posts and beams, integrated lighting, a privacy fence around the pool equipment, a refreshed stair area, and a rebuilt deck with TimberTech Reserve Dark Roast composite decking.
The result is a backyard that works better for entertaining, relaxing, grilling, watching TV, gathering around the pool, and enjoying the outdoor space in more comfort.
The Homeowner’s Vision
The goal was to upgrade an already active backyard into a more refined outdoor living area.
The homeowners had an existing outdoor kitchen, pool deck, pergola-style structure, elevated deck, stairs, and backyard gathering area. The space had strong potential, but it needed more permanent shade, better finish details, improved structure, updated deck materials, and a cleaner overall connection between the poolside living area and the main-level deck.
Wichita Home Works’ in-house design team helped plan the pavilion structure, roofline, cedar ceiling detail, post placement, outdoor lighting, privacy fence, gate, deck replacement, stair updates, railing reuse, post replacement, deck board layout, TV placement, stain matching, and the overall outdoor living flow.
The final design created a backyard that feels more intentional and more complete, with the pavilion and deck working together as one outdoor living system.
Scope of Work
Wichita Home Works coordinated the combined project from design and demolition through framing, roofing, electrical, decking, staining, sealing, final detailing, cleaning, and closeout.
The project included:
Existing Pergola and Outdoor Kitchen Preparation
The poolside outdoor kitchen area originally had a pergola-style cover above the stone outdoor kitchen and bar space.
Wichita Home Works removed the existing pergola materials while working around the existing outdoor kitchen, pool deck, gas line, stone base, grill area, and surrounding hardscape.
The new pavilion was designed to provide a more complete roof structure over the outdoor kitchen while preserving the poolside layout and improving the comfort of the space.
Pavilion Framing and Roof Structure
The new pavilion was built around a stronger, more finished roof system.
Wichita Home Works cut the necessary concrete to set new rough cedar posts, then framed a hip roof structure with a 4:12 pitch. The pavilion included rough cedar posts, post beams, rafters, ceiling joists, subfascia, OSB roof decking, and cedar beam wrapping.
The ceiling was designed with a tray-style look and finished with smooth cedar car siding. This gave the underside of the pavilion a warm, finished appearance that stands out from the pool area below.
The pavilion roof created shade, structure, and visual weight over the outdoor kitchen, helping that area feel more like a true outdoor room.
Roofing and Exterior Finish
The pavilion roof was finished with synthetic felt underlayment, drip edge, starter strip, ridge cap, and architectural shingles.
The cedar posts, post beams, fascia, and ceiling were stained and sealed to coordinate with the existing outdoor wood tones as closely as possible. Because outdoor wood naturally changes with age and sun exposure, the stain work was handled with the goal of creating a clean, coordinated appearance across new and existing elements.
The finished pavilion has a warm, rustic outdoor character that works well with the stone outdoor kitchen and poolside setting.
Outdoor Electrical and Lighting
The pavilion was designed to be useful in the evening as well as during the day.
Wichita Home Works utilized the existing power at the outdoor kitchen island, ran conduit up the pavilion post, installed outdoor switching, added an outlet at the ceiling area, and installed LED puck lights in the pavilion ceiling.
The lighting helps the outdoor kitchen and bar area feel more comfortable after sunset. It also highlights the cedar ceiling and makes the pavilion feel more like a finished living space.
Outdoor TV placement was also coordinated as part of the backyard entertainment plan, helping the pavilion support game days, pool parties, and casual evenings outside.
Cedar Privacy Fence and Gate
The project included a new cedar privacy fence around the pool equipment area.
The fence was built with cedar pickets, stringers, a top cap, and a gate. This helped screen the mechanical side of the pool area while keeping service access available.
The fence and gate were stained and sealed to coordinate with the rest of the outdoor woodwork, helping the utility area feel more finished and integrated into the backyard design.
Stair Post and Handrail Updates
The poolside stair area received post and handrail updates tied to the pavilion and deck work.
A new rough cedar stair post was set where an older post had been removed. The top of the post was shaped to match the existing stair posts as closely as possible, then tied back into the stair railing.
Handrails and stair details were refined so the poolside circulation felt more complete and secure.
Deck Demolition and Preparation
The second part of the project focused on the elevated deck.
Wichita Home Works removed the existing deck boards from the deck, landing, and stairs. Existing railing was removed and saved for reinstallation where planned.
The existing rim joists, floor joists, ledger boards, stair components, selected posts, and footing concrete were removed where needed so the deck could be rebuilt with stronger framing and new surface materials.
This phase created the opportunity to improve the structure below the finished deck boards, not just replace the visible surface.
Deck Framing and Structural Improvements
The new deck was rebuilt in the same general footprint as the previous deck.
Wichita Home Works installed a new treated ledger board with Z flashing between the siding and ledger, treated double rim joists, treated floor joists, stair stringers, replacement cedar posts, and framing for the deck, landing, and stairs.
Joist tape was installed along the top edges of framing members and stair stringers where needed. This helped protect the framing and support the long-term performance of the deck system.
As the deck was opened up, additional structural post replacement was incorporated where needed. This helped strengthen the finished deck and allowed the team to address hidden conditions before the new decking was completed.
Composite Decking and Stair Work
The deck was finished with TimberTech Reserve Dark Roast deck boards.
The main deck boards were installed east to west, with a picture-framed border around the deck surface. The stairs were installed in a straight-lay pattern for a clean and practical stair finish.
Interior deck boards were attached with hidden fasteners, while stair treads, risers, fascia, and edge boards were attached with Top Lock fasteners.
The existing deck railing was reinstalled around the deck and stairs, preserving the overall railing look while giving the deck a new structure and surface.
Covered and Uncovered Deck Areas
The rebuilt deck includes both covered and uncovered areas.
The covered deck area provides protected outdoor space close to the home, while the uncovered deck area gives the homeowners an open-air view toward the backyard and pool.
The layout includes approximately 219 square feet of covered deck area and approximately 94 square feet of uncovered deck area, giving the homeowners more than 300 square feet of elevated outdoor living space connected to the poolside pavilion below.
Staining, Sealing and Finish Details
The cedar pavilion, new posts, fence, gate, stair post, and related wood details were stained and sealed to create a more cohesive outdoor finish.
Some areas needed additional coats because cedar can absorb stain differently depending on material type, grain, weather exposure, and location. Wichita Home Works continued refining the finish so the completed pavilion, fence, and post details would look rich and consistent.
Final exterior details included handrail completion, brick and step refinements, outdoor electrical completion, stain touch-ups, cleaning, and final walkthrough preparation.
Design and Finish Details
This project has a transitional outdoor living style with rustic resort-inspired details.
The stone outdoor kitchen gives the pool area a grounded, natural feel. The new cedar pavilion adds warmth and shade. The hip roof gives the structure a more permanent architectural presence than the previous pergola. The cedar tray ceiling adds detail overhead, while the LED puck lighting helps the space function after dark.
The TimberTech Reserve Dark Roast decking adds a deep, rich tone to the upper deck and stairs. It works well with the stained posts, existing exterior colors, black railing, and poolside materials.
The combination of covered pavilion, composite decking, cedar details, stone, lighting, fencing, and outdoor TV planning makes the backyard feel more like a private outdoor retreat.
Construction Story
This project began with the poolside outdoor kitchen area.
The original pergola had served its purpose, but the homeowners wanted a more substantial cover that made the outdoor kitchen feel like a true destination. Once the pergola materials were removed, Wichita Home Works built a new roofed pavilion with rough cedar posts, cedar-wrapped beams, a tray-style ceiling, lighting, and a shingled hip roof.
The pavilion immediately changed the way the outdoor kitchen felt. It added shade, architectural structure, and a more comfortable setting for grilling, serving, and spending time by the pool.
The privacy fence and gate helped complete the poolside area by screening the pool equipment and tying the wood details together.
The second phase focused on the deck above. Rather than only replacing deck boards, Wichita Home Works rebuilt the framing, ledger, joists, stairs, and selected support posts where needed. This made the finished deck stronger and better prepared for long-term use.
The composite deck boards, picture-framed layout, stair work, and reinstalled railing gave the deck a refreshed look while preserving its relationship to the home and pool area.
Throughout the project, Wichita Home Works coordinated the kind of practical details that matter in outdoor work: post placement, concrete cutting, roof framing, electrical routing, lighting, stain matching, weather-sensitive staining, structural post replacement, deck board layout, railing integration, stair details, and final cleanup.
The completed Camden Chase project shows how two related outdoor projects can work together to transform an entire backyard.
Project Coordination Highlights
Pavilion and Deck Combined as One Backyard Plan
The pavilion and deck were completed as connected outdoor improvements instead of separate upgrades. This helped the backyard feel more cohesive from the pool deck up to the main-level deck.
Poolside Outdoor Kitchen Cover
The new pavilion created a more permanent covered area over the existing outdoor kitchen and bar space, making the poolside area more comfortable and usable.
Cedar Ceiling and Warm Wood Details
The cedar tray ceiling, wrapped beams, posts, fence, gate, and stair details add warmth and character throughout the backyard.
Composite Deck Rebuild
The elevated deck was rebuilt with new framing, flashing, joist tape, stair work, and TimberTech Reserve Dark Roast decking.
Outdoor Entertainment Planning
Lighting, outlet placement, TV coordination, and the covered pavilion layout help the backyard support entertaining, pool use, and evening gatherings.
Structural and Finish Refinement
The project included additional post replacement, stair updates, railing reinstallation, handrail work, stain touch-ups, and final detailing to make the finished outdoor spaces feel complete.
The Finished Result
The finished Camden Chase project created a much more complete backyard living environment.
The poolside pavilion now gives the outdoor kitchen shade, lighting, structure, and a warm cedar ceiling. The privacy fence screens pool equipment while keeping the space attractive. The deck above now has a refreshed composite surface, rebuilt framing, updated stair structure, and a rich Dark Roast finish.
Together, the pavilion and deck create multiple outdoor zones. The homeowners can cook and gather under the pavilion, enjoy the poolside bar area, watch TV outside, relax on the elevated deck, and move between the home and pool with a more finished connection.
The result is a practical and visually strong backyard upgrade that improves shade, structure, comfort, safety, entertaining, and long-term usability.
Why This Project Matters for Future Outdoor Living Clients
This project is a strong example for homeowners who want to improve an outdoor living area in stages while still creating one cohesive result.
A backyard remodel can include more than one feature. A pavilion can improve shade and entertainment. A deck rebuild can improve safety, durability, and appearance. A privacy fence can hide equipment. Lighting and electrical can make the space more useful at night. Staining and finish details can tie everything together.
For homeowners near Wichita, Andover, Eastborough, Bel Aire, Maize, Derby, and surrounding communities, this project shows how Wichita Home Works can coordinate outdoor structures, decking, fencing, lighting, and finish details into a complete backyard living upgrade.
