Wichita’s Guide to Energy-Efficient Home Improvements: Save Money and the Planet

Wichita's Guide to Energy-Efficient Home Improvements

As Wichitans navigate the seasonal swings in temperature, from scorching summers to chilly winters, the energy efficiency of our homes becomes a significant factor in both comfort and cost. Investing in energy-efficient home improvements not only reduces your monthly utility bills but also contributes to a more sustainable environment. Wichita Home Works is committed to helping homeowners in the area make smart choices that save money and lessen their environmental footprint. This guide will explore key energy-efficient home renovations and  upgrades, including insulation, window replacements, energy-efficient appliances, and solar panel installations.

1. Insulation: The Foundation of Energy Savings

Proper insulation is the cornerstone of an energy-efficient home. It acts as a thermal barrier, keeping heat inside during the winter and outside during the summer, reducing the workload on your HVAC system.

  • Attic Insulation: Heat rises, making the attic a prime area for heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Ensure your attic has the recommended level of insulation (typically R-38 to R-60 for Wichita’s climate). Consider adding blown-in cellulose or fiberglass insulation for an effective and cost-efficient upgrade.
  • Wall Insulation: Many older homes in Wichita have insufficient or no wall insulation. Options like blown-in insulation or rigid foam boards can significantly improve energy efficiency and comfort.
  • Crawl Space and Basement Insulation: Insulating crawl spaces and basements can prevent drafts and moisture issues, contributing to a more stable and energy-efficient home. Consider rigid foam boards or spray foam insulation for these areas.
  • Air Sealing: Even with good insulation, air leaks around windows, doors, pipes, and electrical outlets can negate its effectiveness. Sealing these leaks with caulk, weatherstripping, and spray foam is a crucial step in maximizing energy savings.

2. Window Replacements: Sealing Energy Escape Routes

Old, single-pane windows are notorious for energy loss. Upgrading to energy-efficient windows can make a significant difference in your home’s comfort and energy bills.

  • Double and Triple Pane Windows: These windows feature multiple layers of glass with an insulating gas (like argon or krypton) in between, reducing heat transfer.
  • Low-E Coatings: Low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings on the glass reflect infrared light, keeping heat out in the summer and in during the winter.
  • Frame Materials: Consider energy-efficient frame materials like vinyl or fiberglass, which are better insulators than aluminum.
  • Proper Installation: Even the most energy-efficient windows won’t perform well if they aren’t installed correctly. Professional installation ensures a tight seal and maximizes energy savings.

3. Energy-Efficient Appliances: Reducing Energy Consumption at the Source

Appliances account for a significant portion of a home’s energy usage. Upgrading to ENERGY STAR certified appliances can lead to substantial savings over their lifespan.

  • Refrigerators: Look for ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators, which use significantly less energy than older models. Consider features like adaptive defrost and efficient compressors.
  • Dishwashers: ENERGY STAR dishwashers use less water and energy per cycle. Look for models with soil sensors and efficient wash cycles.
  • Washing Machines: High-efficiency (HE) washing machines use less water and energy. Front-loading models are generally more efficient than top-loading ones.
  • Dryers: Look for ENERGY STAR certified dryers with moisture sensors to prevent over-drying. Consider heat pump dryers for even greater energy savings.
  • Water Heaters: Upgrade to an energy-efficient water heater, such as a tankless water heater (which heats water on demand) or a heat pump water heater (which uses electricity to move heat).

4. Solar Panel Installations: Harnessing the Power of the Sun

For homeowners looking to make a significant long-term investment in energy independence and sustainability, solar panel installations are an increasingly attractive option in Wichita.

  • Reduced Electricity Bills: Solar panels generate clean electricity, offsetting your reliance on the grid and significantly reducing or even eliminating your monthly electricity bills.
  • Government Incentives: Federal, state, and local incentives, such as tax credits and rebates, can help offset the initial cost of solar panel installation.
  • Increased Home Value: Homes with solar panel systems are often more attractive to buyers and can command a higher resale value.
  • Environmental Benefits: Solar energy is a clean, renewable energy source that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps combat climate change.
  • Net Metering: Kansas has net metering policies that allow homeowners with solar panels to receive credits on their electricity bills for any excess energy they send back to the grid.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I grew up around construction, remodeling, maintenance and all of that, my dad was one of those fix anything types and so we never called someone to come work on the house. I also was able to tag along with my dad when he had a job of his own to complete that had to do with construction or remodel or repair. Throughout high school and college I worked in the trades doing everything from carpentry to concrete in both residential and commercial applications. I also ran my own cabinet shop while in high school and college and knew that I wanted to work for myself and go out on my own in business, I graduated with a Bachelors of science in business administration and small busienss management in 2014. I met my wife Danielle while working maintenance for our churches summer camp, Danielle and her family were all from Wichita Kansas. After graduation I married Danielle and we moved to Wichita Kansas to start our own journey. I started Wichita Home works in 2015 with just one main floor kitchen remodel and one guy doing the work, it went very well and the rest is history. We built some key relationships along the way while learning and building wichita home works, we spun off quite a few businesses and divisions such as Integrity trade services, and complete concrete solutions, mainly out of necessity. We found it increasingly difficult to find trades that would live up to our high expectations and therefore we decided to do it ourself.
