Ready for Spring

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

Start Early: March and April are the best months to begin because the weather is mild and the ground is ready for digging.

• Order Fast: Cabinets and windows can take months to arrive, so buy them before the construction starts.

• Check Licenses: Always make sure your builder has a Wichita license and insurance to keep your home safe.

• Set a Buffer: Add two weeks to your schedule to account for rainy spring days.

• Clean the Area: Moving your furniture and wall art before the crew arrives keeps your things safe and helps the work go faster.

Why is Early Spring the Best Time to Start a Major Remodel?

Early spring is the best time to start because the ground is soft enough for digging, and the weather is perfect for working both inside and outside. Starting your project in March or April means you won’t have to deal with the freezing winter air or the scorching summer heat while your house is open. It also means your new space will likely be finished in time for 4th of July BBQs or summer birthdays.

In Wichita, spring weather can be tricky, but it is the peak time for home updates. Experts say that starting early helps you get on a contractor’s schedule before they are fully booked for the year. If you wait until June, you might find that the best crews are already busy until the fall.

Typical Spring Remodel Timeline

Typical Spring Remodel Timeline

Phase Time Frame What Happens

Planning 4-6 Weeks Picking colors, buying cabinets, getting permits

Demolition 1 Week Ripping out the old walls and floors

Rough-In 2-4 Weeks Putting in new pipes, wires, and wall frames

Finishing 3-5 Weeks Adding drywall, paint, and flooring

Cleanup 1 Week Final scrub and moving your furniture back in

How Do You Transition from Indoor Planning to Construction?

You move from the planning stage to the building stage by making your final choices on materials and getting all your permits. This is the time when you stop looking at pictures on the internet and start signing contracts. You must order items that take a long time to ship, like custom windows or special tiles, so they are at your house when the builder needs them.

Think of a family who wants a new sunroom. During the winter, they drew the plans. In early spring, they buy the glass and the wood. By doing this, the builder can start digging as soon as the frost is gone. This keeps the project moving without any stops.

What is the Essential Contractor Checklist for Spring Kickoff?

Your checklist should include checking the contractor’s local license, making sure they have insurance, and reading the “scope of work.” This document is a list of everything the builder promises to do. Checking these things protects you and your home.

The Kickoff Checklist:

• License: Does the builder have a license from the City of Wichita?

• Insurance: Do they have papers that show they are covered for accidents?

• Schedule: Did they give you a start and end date in writing?

• Cleanup: Who is in charge of taking away the trash and old wood?

• Communication: How will they tell you about updates or problems?

How Can You Prepare Your Home and Family for the Construction Phase?

You can prepare by making a “safe zone” for your family and clearing the work area of all your personal things. Construction is dusty and loud. It is a good idea to tape plastic sheets over doorways to keep the dust from moving to other rooms. If you are fixing your kitchen, set up a “mini-kitchen” in the garage or dining room with a microwave and a coffee pot.

Clear out all your pictures, rugs, and breakable items from the rooms being worked on. This gives the workers more space to move and prevents your favorite things from getting broken or dirty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a permit for an indoor remodel?

Yes, in most cases. The City of Wichita requires permits for things like moving walls, changing wires, or fixing pipes. Your contractor usually handles this for you.

What happens if it rains for a week in April?

This is common in Kansas! A good schedule should have “rain days” built in. If the rain stops exterior work, the crew can often work on indoor parts of the project instead.

Should I stay in my house during a big remodel?

You can, but it will be loud. If you are doing a whole-house remodel, some people choose to stay with family for a week a two during the loudest parts, like demolition.

How do I know if my contractor is good?

Look for a builder with a physical office in Wichita and good reviews. Ask to see pictures of their recent work in neighborhoods near you.

Conclusion

Getting ready for a spring remodel is all about being organized. By creating a timeline and using
a checklist, you can move from the planning phase to the construction phase with no stress.
Remember to pick your materials early and check your contractor’s papers before they start. A
little bit of work now leads to a beautiful home later.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I grew up around construction, remodeling, maintenance and all of that, my dad was one of those fix anything types and so we never called someone to come work on the house. I also was able to tag along with my dad when he had a job of his own to complete that had to do with construction or remodel or repair. Throughout high school and college I worked in the trades doing everything from carpentry to concrete in both residential and commercial applications. I also ran my own cabinet shop while in high school and college and knew that I wanted to work for myself and go out on my own in business, I graduated with a Bachelors of science in business administration and small busienss management in 2014. I met my wife Danielle while working maintenance for our churches summer camp, Danielle and her family were all from Wichita Kansas. After graduation I married Danielle and we moved to Wichita Kansas to start our own journey. I started Wichita Home works in 2015 with just one main floor kitchen remodel and one guy doing the work, it went very well and the rest is history. We built some key relationships along the way while learning and building wichita home works, we spun off quite a few businesses and divisions such as Integrity trade services, and complete concrete solutions, mainly out of necessity. We found it increasingly difficult to find trades that would live up to our high expectations and therefore we decided to do it ourself.
