Kitchen Renovation Timing: Is a Fall Remodel Worth It?

Should I Start a Kitchen Remodel When the Holidays Are Approaching?

Yes, starting your kitchen remodel in the fall is often worth the temporary disruption because the benefits arrive exactly when you need them—when winter sets in and you are spending more time inside. While it seems scary to start a big project near Thanksgiving, planning carefully lets you finish the major work before December. Contractors often have more availability during the late fall than they do in the busy summer months. This timing allows you to kick off the new year with a completely fresh, functional, and updated kitchen that is ready for all your future gatherings.

What Are the Main Benefits of Remodeling a Kitchen in the Fall?

The main benefits of a fall remodel involve timing, contractor availability, and preparation for winter. If you start in September or October, you may get better service because contractors’ schedules are typically lighter than they were from June through August. This quiet period can mean fewer delays and more focused work on your home. Also, when winter comes, you want to be indoors and comfortable. By doing the work in the fall, you get a beautiful, efficient space ready for the cold weather and the increased time you spend cooking and entertaining inside.

Does Starting in Fall Save Me Money?

Sometimes, yes. While the cost of materials stays mostly the same all year, the timing can affect prices in small ways. Some suppliers offer sales on appliances or cabinetry near the end of the year to clear out inventory. Furthermore, if you can avoid the high-demand summer season, you might find that contractors can offer a better price because they want to keep their teams busy. Even small savings on materials and labor can add up in a big project like a kitchen. For example, a study by home improvement resource groups showed that remodel prices often see a 2% to 4% dip in the fourth quarter compared to peak summer months.

How Does a Fall Remodel Help Energy Efficiency?

Kitchen remodeling done in the fall can greatly improve your home’s energy efficiency before the coldest part of the Wichita winter hits. New windows, better insulation in walls, and new back doors installed during the remodel all work to stop warm air from escaping. Since kitchens often have several outside walls or a door, making these updates can significantly lower your heating bills. An updated kitchen with efficient appliances and sealed openings is a strong defense against the harsh Kansas winds and cold.

What Are the Challenges of Remodeling Near the Holidays and How Do I Manage Them?

The biggest challenge is managing the kitchen disruption during times when you normally cook or host. You can manage this by creating a Temporary Kitchen Station and planning your meals differently.

How Do I Create a Temporary Kitchen Station?

You can set up a simple cooking and cleaning area in your dining room, basement, or garage. This area should include:

  1. Mini-Fridge: For keeping drinks and quick-grab food.
  2. Microwave and Toaster Oven: These tools handle most simple cooking tasks.
  3. Slow Cooker or Electric Griddle: These allow you to cook full, simple meals without using the main oven or stove.
  4. Cleaning Station: Use a large plastic tub or a utility sink for washing dishes, or plan to use disposable plates and cutlery for a short time to keep cleaning simple.

By setting up this station early, you make sure that the kitchen tear-down doesn’t cause a sudden panic about dinner. This preparation is key to staying comfortable during the process.

How Can I Plan Holiday Meals Without a Kitchen?

If your renovation goes through the major holidays, plan to use your temporary station for simple meals, or look at other options. You could plan to host a potluck where everyone brings a fully prepared dish, or consider using a professional catering service for the main holiday dinner. Another idea is to ask a friend or family member if you can use their oven for a few hours on a slow afternoon to do the main cooking. For example, if your new cabinets are going in the week before Thanksgiving, planning to serve catered sandwiches instead of a full turkey dinner will remove a lot of stress.

How Long Does a Typical Kitchen Remodel Take?

A full kitchen remodel in Wichita typically takes about 10 to 12 weeks from the day demolition starts until the last cabinet door is installed. This estimate does not include the long planning phase before construction begins, which usually takes 4 to 8 weeks itself. The length of time depends on how many changes you make and how quickly materials arrive.

The work breaks down into several parts:

  • Demolition and Rough-In (1-2 weeks): Removing old cabinets, flooring, and appliances; updating plumbing and electrical wiring.
  • Inspections and Drywall (1-2 weeks): City inspections and fixing walls.
  • Cabinet Installation (1-3 weeks): Installing the new cabinets. This takes time because it must be done precisely.
  • Countertop Installation (1-2 weeks): This starts with a day for measuring, then a wait of 1 to 2 weeks while the stone or material is cut, followed by installation.
  • Flooring, Backsplash, and Appliances (2-3 weeks): The final details that make the kitchen usable.

By starting your project in mid-September, you have a solid chance of having a functional kitchen ready for holiday parties by early December.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fall Kitchen Timing

Is it harder to get building permits in the fall?

No, the process for getting building permits remains the same throughout the year in Wichita. The time it takes is handled by the city’s building department, not the season. Your contractor, such as Wichita Home Works, manages this process and paperwork for you, making sure all work meets local building codes.

What if my materials are delayed?

Material delays are the most common cause of slowing down a remodel. If you are worried about the holidays, the best step is to order and store all major items—cabinets, appliances, and flooring—before the demolition even begins. By having the materials already sitting in your garage or a storage unit, you remove the risk of waiting on a delivery truck that might be delayed.

Should I buy new appliances before or after I order cabinets?

You should always choose and finalize the models of your new appliances before you order the cabinets. Cabinet sizes are custom-made to fit specific appliance sizes (like the width of your oven or the depth of your refrigerator). If you change your mind on an appliance later, it might not fit the space that was built for it, which causes expensive delays and changes.

Conclusion and Next Steps

Deciding to start a kitchen remodel in the fall is a smart choice that helps you get ahead of the spring rush and enjoy a beautiful new space during the long winter season. By setting up a temporary kitchen and planning ahead for material deliveries, you can easily manage the project and have your dream kitchen ready for all the good times ahead.

The best time to start thinking about your fall kitchen remodel is right now. Planning early ensures that you get the best materials and the cleanest schedule.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I grew up around construction, remodeling, maintenance and all of that, my dad was one of those fix anything types and so we never called someone to come work on the house. I also was able to tag along with my dad when he had a job of his own to complete that had to do with construction or remodel or repair. Throughout high school and college I worked in the trades doing everything from carpentry to concrete in both residential and commercial applications. I also ran my own cabinet shop while in high school and college and knew that I wanted to work for myself and go out on my own in business, I graduated with a Bachelors of science in business administration and small busienss management in 2014. I met my wife Danielle while working maintenance for our churches summer camp, Danielle and her family were all from Wichita Kansas. After graduation I married Danielle and we moved to Wichita Kansas to start our own journey. I started Wichita Home works in 2015 with just one main floor kitchen remodel and one guy doing the work, it went very well and the rest is history. We built some key relationships along the way while learning and building wichita home works, we spun off quite a few businesses and divisions such as Integrity trade services, and complete concrete solutions, mainly out of necessity. We found it increasingly difficult to find trades that would live up to our high expectations and therefore we decided to do it ourself.
