Curb Appeal for the Cold: Exterior Upgrades That Shine in the Fall

Exterior of a home

Why Is Fall the Best Time for Exterior Upgrades?

The cooler, drier weather in fall makes it the perfect time for exterior home renovation projects because it allows materials to cure and settle correctly before the intense cold and moisture of winter. Fall upgrades also ensure your home is fully insulated and protected before the worst of the Kansas weather arrives. Plus, refreshing your curb appeal in the autumn means your home will look great for holiday visitors and potentially increase its value.

Does Replacing My Garage Door Really Improve Home Value?

Yes, replacing your garage door offers one of the absolute best returns on investment (ROI) for any home improvement project, often giving back more than you spend when you sell. The 2024 Cost vs. Value Report shows that homeowners recover an estimated 102.7% of the cost of a garage door replacement, making it a powerful financial upgrade. This project is fast, affordable, and gives your home a major visual lift right away, protecting your car and belongings from winter cold.

A new garage door is also one of the largest single features on the front of a house, meaning it has a huge impact on curb appeal. If your existing door is cracked, warped, or loud, replacing it with a modern, insulated steel or composite door instantly modernizes the entire look of your home while also saving energy.

How Can a New Front Door Help My Home Shine?

A new front door serves two main purposes: it provides a fresh, welcoming focal point for your home and acts as a strong barrier against chilly drafts. Choosing a stylish, high-quality steel or fiberglass door can lead to recovering about 39% of the project’s cost upon resale, according to the 2024 Cost vs. Value Report. You can choose a bold new color—like deep navy or fiery red—to make a statement against the subdued colors of the fall landscape, instantly giving your home a polished look.

Beyond aesthetics, an old door can leak significant amounts of heat, causing your furnace to work harder. Replacing it ensures a tight, energy-efficient seal, which is crucial as the temperatures drop in Wichita. For example, if your old wooden door has cracks and a loose frame, replacing it with a new fiberglass model featuring a tight-fitting weather seal can cut down on energy loss dramatically.

Why Should I Think About New Siding Before Winter Hits?

Replacing old, faded, or damaged siding is the single best way to prepare your home for winter, protect its structure, and boost curb appeal for years to come. New siding is essentially a full-body shield for your house, guarding against wind, snow, and ice, and providing necessary insulation. For homeowners in Wichita, new siding is a smart financial decision, too: fiber cement siding replacement offers an estimated ROI of about 45% upon resale, while even vinyl siding returns around 35% of the cost (Cost vs. Value Report, 2024).

The old siding on your house might be hiding damage like wood rot or moisture issues. Replacing it in the fall allows our team to address any problems before the extreme wet and freezing conditions of winter arrive. Siding replacement is a large project, but the result is a home that looks completely brand new, performs better, and protects your family during the harshest months.

FAQs: Exterior Upgrades

Why is curb appeal so important if I’m not planning to sell my home right now?

Curb appeal is about more than just selling; it’s about pride in ownership and protecting your investment. If your home looks well-maintained, it helps your neighborhood look better and often prevents small issues from becoming big, costly problems later on. Plus, simply driving up to a beautiful home improves your daily mood!

What is the biggest difference between a new door and simply painting my old one?

While painting your old door can change its color, a new door offers modern construction features that a simple paint job cannot fix. New doors come with factory-installed weather stripping, insulated cores (especially fiberglass and steel models), and frames designed to prevent air and moisture leaks, leading to better energy efficiency that saves you money on heating bills.

Will the cold weather affect the installation process for new siding or doors?

No, fall weather is usually ideal for these installations. Extreme heat (over 90 degrees F) can make vinyl siding too flexible, and extreme cold (below 35 degrees F) can make it brittle. The temperate conditions in the fall, before the major freezes of December and January, are perfect for properly fitting, sealing, and curing materials like caulk and trim. Our teams plan installations to happen during the best windows of weather.

What are the best colors for exterior upgrades in Wichita?

For a classic, enduring look, dark, saturated colors are very popular. Consider an earthy gray or a deep blue for siding, paired with white trim for contrast. For doors, colors like black, deep green, or a natural wood stain always look sophisticated and attractive. The key is to choose colors that complement your home’s fixed elements, like brick or stone.

Do I need a permit from the City of Wichita for these types of exterior projects?

For major structural changes like new siding, or certain door and window replacements, a building permit is often required to ensure the work meets local safety and construction standards. Wichita Home Works handles all necessary permits and inspections for you, making the process simple and stress-free.

Conclusion and Call to Action

Upgrading your home’s exterior in the fall is a proactive step that protects your investment, saves you money on winter energy bills, and makes your home the best-looking house on the block. From the high financial return of a new garage door to the instant style upgrade of a front door and the complete protection of new siding, these projects ensure your home shines all through the cold months.

Don’t wait until the first hard freeze hits Kansas to discover a drafty door or deteriorating siding. Now is the perfect moment to weatherproof and revitalize your home’s curb appeal.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I grew up around construction, remodeling, maintenance and all of that, my dad was one of those fix anything types and so we never called someone to come work on the house. I also was able to tag along with my dad when he had a job of his own to complete that had to do with construction or remodel or repair. Throughout high school and college I worked in the trades doing everything from carpentry to concrete in both residential and commercial applications. I also ran my own cabinet shop while in high school and college and knew that I wanted to work for myself and go out on my own in business, I graduated with a Bachelors of science in business administration and small busienss management in 2014. I met my wife Danielle while working maintenance for our churches summer camp, Danielle and her family were all from Wichita Kansas. After graduation I married Danielle and we moved to Wichita Kansas to start our own journey. I started Wichita Home works in 2015 with just one main floor kitchen remodel and one guy doing the work, it went very well and the rest is history. We built some key relationships along the way while learning and building wichita home works, we spun off quite a few businesses and divisions such as Integrity trade services, and complete concrete solutions, mainly out of necessity. We found it increasingly difficult to find trades that would live up to our high expectations and therefore we decided to do it ourself.
